no one told us. we did know what was happening at the plant to the rumor in the neighborhood was that the plant was operated by dow chemical and it went out there making household cleaning supplies. my mother thought they were making scrubbing bubbles, and it was really apparent for quite a long time what was actually going on. and what happened at rocky flats now is that there has been a cleanup and a very controversial cleanup, controversial levels of contamination remaining in the soil, and 1300 acres of that site are still profoundly contaminated that they can never ever be open for human habitation. and the rest of the site is slated to open as a national wildlife refuge for hiking and biking and possibly hunting. so even though there's still a great deal of contamination on the site and there's a lot of homebuilding and shopping malls and highways in all sorts of things going on out there. so i felt that even though in colorado and the country as a whole i think would like to forget that rocky

to want to be like us. it is so bad now that while our university systems are still where they should be in terms of reputation, no one from other countries wants to send their kids over here to go through our k-12 schools. we are at the point now where what we need to seriously look at is what it will take to change the dynamic. in recent days, we heard about the teachers' strike. i think the big challenge we have is we put ourselves in these partisan boxes and we force people to take sides. you know the side that is never adequately represented in these discussions is kids. i just posted on my blog, how will a teachers strike in chicago help kids? after getting all of these responses from people who love teachers, are mad at teachers, i had 40 people immediately respond and no one can answer the question. teachers do not want to have the evaluations. or the 10 year issue. the teachers want to make sure the first ones who are hired are the ones who are laid off, where some of the ones who are laid off will

matter of fact, we thought about that as we were stopped on a highway and people were barreling at us, i thought, wow, 400 kilometers is a long way if something goes wrong here. but it puts it all in perspective. their health care was wiped out and they don't have the resources. that's something we would still like to do. the real lesson here is people are way more resilient than we give them credit for. it didn't get better, it got worse. yet they carried on. that's what i take inspiration from. you look at these pictures, you look at the people, you look at the children, a couple pictures of the inside of the tent, it was spotless. if you look at the children they are not filthy by any stretch. there are no bugs. i'm a paramedic, i've been bugs. there are no bugs. my lesson is how do i set things up, how do i bring this back and how does our department, how does our city, how does every single one of us that has a word to say about this help our community set it up to where they will be that resilient? because what we've seen here is we plan for 7.9 or we plan for 7.5, it's often ti
